Choose a Coffee Table Scaled to Your Living Room
Proportion determines whether a coffee table works in a room. As a general guide, leave 14 to 18 inches of clearance between the table and any seating, and choose a length roughly two-thirds the length of your sofa.
Shape changes how a coffee table functions within a room. Rectangular and oval tables suit longer sectionals and narrow living rooms, where the extended length keeps the table in proportion with the seating. Round and square tables work well in smaller spaces or in front of two facing sofas, since there are no corners to navigate around high-traffic paths. A low-profile table keeps sightlines open in a room with art or a fireplace positioned above it. Height should also sit within an inch or two of your seat cushions, close enough for the table to stay functional without rising above the sofa arm.
Material also matters to the finished look: wood and stone read warmer within Organic Desert Living®, while glass and metal tables work well in a room that needs a lighter visual weight.
